Abstract

The magnetic properties of Sm(sub2)Fe(sub17), a binary alloy, can be change by interstitial modifications of the rhombohedral Th(sub2)Zn(sub17) structure. Several Sm(sub2+delta)Fe(sub15)Ga(sub2)Cy samples were prepared with different Sm contents. Element purity was at least 99.9% and melt spinning achieved the best magnetic properties for all compositions. There is a strong influence of the Sm content on the melt-spun Sm(2+delta)Fe(sub15)Ga(sub2)C(sub2) coercive field. However neither grain size or shape was affected by the Sm content.
