Abstract

Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok airport, which opens for business on Jul 6 1998, has attracted attention as a major architectural and engineering project. The airport's opening is also significant in the economic development of Hong Kong, particularly as it coincides with a regional economic crisis. The new airport is a major rival to other regional airports. It will allow Hong Kong to accommodate night-time cargo flights for the first time in its history, and sophisticated infrastructure and transport connections offer business travellers a speedy departure from the airport.
