Abstract: The contrary behavior of a submonolayer of the spiropyran (SP) and merocyanine (MC) molecules adsorbed on a Au(111) surface is reported. The metal surface has played a major part in the ring-opening reaction of nitrospiropyran and is used for altering the stability of the two isomers.
