Abstract

Early traders discovered the economic benefits in shipping along coastal areas of the US over inland waterways. Coastal trading continues to be important during the 1990s. Coastal trade surpassed the amount of international trade after the 1820s, with such cities as Boston, MA, and Philadelphia, PA involved. Coastal trade was three times as heavy as international trade by 1890.
