Retail tenancy area under scrutiny: a review of federal government proposals.

The Australian federal government announced several proposals regarding retail tenancy in its Sep 30, 1997 Fair Trading Inquiry Report. Attempting to balance competing interests, the government indicated it would take a leading role in developing a safety net for small retailers, who face inconsistencies under state and territorial laws. The proposals include prohibiting unconscionable conduct in business transactions, nationally consistent tenancy law, and a federal, state, and territorial council to help reform retail tenancy law.
