Abstract

Metropolitan area networks (MANs) have provided the carrier industry with broadband data services as in local area networks (LAN) for voice services and communication lines. However, access networks slow down processing and profitability among carriers. Redesigning the carriers' network is suggested to achieve optimum network performance. MANs can be redesigned so as to match LAN speed and meet packet data demands. Asynchronous transfer mode can also provide access networks with an integrated service transport which offers carriers with broadband data services for the voice market demand.<br />Public networks are about to run out of steam.
