Abstract

The effect of food deprivation on hypothalamic neuropetide Y and corticotropin-releasing factor gene expression in the Djungarian hamster was investigated. The study cloned cDNA from the animals to examine the ob gene expression. Results indicated that neuroendocrine consequences of food deprivation in the hamsters were determined by some factor aside from body mass such as the size of adipose tissue reserves. Furthermore, food-deprived hamsters experienced reduced plasma insulin concentrations.
