Abstract

Jigme Singye Wangchuck is King of Bhutan, and he prefers to live in a log cabin rather than in his palace. He has been king since he was 17-years-old, and was previously educated in England. He argues that he was not prepared for the task but was aided by the faith of his people. He is concerned about infant mortality figures, life expectancy, and availability of health care, and improvements in these areas have been made without using large foreign loans. He aims to preserve Bhutan's traditions and the environment and has opposed logging. He wishes to decentralise power, while preserving tradition.
