Abstract

Scottish carers are given little support by employers with regard to absenteeism and tiredness caused by the stress of combining work and caring, according to a survey of 319 private sector firms in Scotland. Disability allowances make a big difference to low income families, although no help is given to assist people off benefit and back into work. Over 6 million pounds sterling was paid out in disability benefits to low income households in 1992, rising to 8.6 million pounds sterling in 1996. Disabled women face social and medical discrimination when having children.
