Abstract
- The leader of the United Kingdom Conservative party, William Hague, has moved the party toward a view that is less enthusiastic on European monetary union (Emu). He became leader of the party in Jun 1997. The party opposes UK membership of Emu for a decade. This view has led to divisions within the party. Hague argues that there are too many differences withn Europe for political integration to proceed very far. He also argues that there is a need for a wider focus beyond Europe.
