Abstract

The Nov 1996 national election in Thailand, resulting in a six-party coalition government, reflects a continuity of government not evident from the chaotic process. Thais recognize that they have a semi-democracy, their election process providing only limited access to government through provincial politicians who gain power through their business connections. Political reform, including the drafting of a new constitution, has been contentious, and middle class urban Thais remain frustrated by the lack of government accountability and vote buying during frequent elections.
