Abstract

A study was conducted on the noise characteristics of a NbN phono-cooled hot-electron mixer operating at a frequency of 2.5 THz. A = 23 dB system conversion loss at intermediate frequencies of up to 1 GHz and a =14000 K double sideband mixer noise temperature were achieved for optimal operation. The mixer temperature noise was found to be dependent on local oscillator power, bias voltage and intermediate frequency.
