Abstract

Convention participants can look forward to a treat of dances in Indonesia. This island archipelago's dances are as diverse as the ethnic cultures that make up its society. Dances range from Java's elaborate open-air ballet to Bali's Kecak. Aside from the Kecak, other popular Balinese dances are the Barong and Legong. The Kecak and the Barong are a dramatization of the battle between good and evil while the Legong is a beautifully choreographed pantomime for young girls. Although these dance dramas are usually reserved for special religious festivals, staged productions are regularly held at local tourist centers and major hotels.<br />Dance in Indonesia is as diverse as the various ethnic cultures that make up this 17,580-island archipelago.
