Abstract

The metabolic pathways involved in the bacterial oxidation of 2-napthoate by Burkholderia sp. strain JT 1500 were analyzed during microbial growth based on enzyme assays, oxygen uptake experiments and thin-layer chromatography. Analysis of the biodegradation of 2-napthoate by Burkholderia sp. strain JT 1500 indicated the presence of a 13-step catabolic pathway that was similar to the oxidation of phenanthrene. Furthermore, the catabolism of 2-napthoate involved the accumulation of 1-Hydroxy-2-naphthoate which was metabolized via 1,2-ring cleavage to 2'-carboxybenzalpyruvate.
