Abstract

The Uganda Women's Effort to Save Orphans (Uweso), an organisation established in 1986 by Janet Museveni, wife of the Ugandan president, is helping thousands of Ugandan women to raise children orphaned by Aids. Uganda has a population of 18 million, of which 1.5 million are Aids orphans. Each of Uweso's 7,500 members cares for an average of seven Aids orphans. Uweso encourages the women caring for orphans in their rural homes to become small traders as well as providing funds for the orphans to attend primary school followed by vocational or artisan training.
