Abstract

Brush-border membrane vesicles isolated from the euryhaline Anguilla anguilla were analyzed to determine the mechanisms of electroneutral anion exchange across the luminal membrane. Analysis of luminal bicarbonate translocation in isolated eel brush-border membranes indicated the presence of a Cl-/bicarbonate exchange that operates at the apical level of the eel kidney absorbing cells. The antiporter also worked in conjunction with an Na+/H+ exchanger during fluid homeostasis in euryhaline eels.
