Evaluating the demand for supergauge trucks-on-trains services in Western Europe

Abstract: The potential demand for SNCF's planned Autoroute Ferroviaire rail service from diverted road and ferry traffic was investigated. To estimate the potential traffic, a multinomial logit model for optimizing the cost per journey and the use of time with respect to the volume and the shortest route was employed. The results indicated that the rail offering, which will connect France with Italy, Spain and the UK, will be economically viable despite its large start-up costs.
