Large-scale, high-priced applications: an introduction

Operations research has been implemented many times to solve large-scale real-world problems. Despite its reputation for being a largely academic exercise grounded in mathematics, it is currently being used to derive more efficient, environmentally friendly and feasible solutions to scheduling, planning and control problems in the nuclear power, telecommunications, airline, and shipbuilding industries.
