Warehouse stores such as Costco Wholesale Corp. and discount store chains such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Kmart Corp. are focusing on groceries as a category to increase sales. Costco's handling of perishable foods is excellent, consultant James Degen says. Wal-Mart plans to open food distribution centers in Illinois and South Carolina in 1997.
