Abstract

Byline: M. Chen, L.L. Jing, G. Liu Machinability of new developed Al/(Sip+SiCp) was investigated experimentally in terms of cutting force, vibration, tool wear and surface quality. Results showed that the machinability of Al/Sip was improved when certain volume fraction of Sip was replaced by SiCp. Favourable machinability was obtained by Al/(Sip+SiCp) with 8% SiCp and 50% Sip. Compared to Al/Sip with 65% Sip, cutting force was reduced by nearly 80%, tool wear for 30 seconds decreased by 50% and machined surface was smoother. The vibration was, however, rather serious. Therefore, the control of vibration became necessary in cutting of Al/(Sip+SiCp).
