Abstract

The UK tends to be a long way behind the rest of Europe in making the study of foreign languages compulsory for all school pupils. There is a very insular attitude towards the learning of foreign languages, with many young people not regarding foreign languages as a necessary skill. Kingsfield School in Bristol, England, has tried to deal with this problem by taking pupils to Chelsea Football Club, which has several foreign players. These players were keen to emphasise the advantages associated with being able to speak foreign languages.
