Abstract

Several studies have shown that stress causes gastrointestinal disorders in humans. In a study of gastrointestinal function in rats, it was shown that rats subjected to stress by exposure to a short session of stressful foot shocks showed increases in colonic spike burst frequency compared with control. This suggests that rats respond to stress by increasing colonic motility.
