Abstract

The US is currently engaged in a massive environmental remediation effort aimed at cleaning up decades of contamination at nuclear weapons plants. Many scientists believe, however, that the approaches and technologies adopted so far by the program's managers are technically flawed and unrealistic. They believe that more effort should be focused on basic research, with the goal of developing new and more effective remediation technologies.
