Abstract

Inactivation of Cryptosporidium, after the gastrointestinal illness caused by the microorganism in Milwaukee in 1993, involves the use of ozone in the treatment of water. A four-pronged approach was used for developing Milwaukee's ozonation facilities. Apart from being the only disinfectant that can kill Cryptosporidium at acceptable levels, ozonation prevents the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products in water. It also improves filter performance for public drinking-water supply for potable water. The three primary applications in ozone application is discussed.
