Abstract

Expedited External Inspection (EEI) techniques using video cameras can help petroleum companies to save money while meeting the Formal External Inspection (FEI) requirements of American Petroleum Institute Standard 653 (API 653) for tank inspection. API 653, which was published in 1992, requires informal inspections every month, FEIs every five years or less, and Formal Internal Inspections every ten years or less. EEIs reduce the time needed for written reports by replacing photographs and drawings with video tapes.<br />API Standard 653 requires that operators periodically conduct formal external inspections of above-ground storage tanks.(1) An expedited method of performing these inspections on in-service tanks reduces the potential for accidents [...]
