Abstract

A Bacillus cereus UW85-produced antibiotic, Kanosamine, is inhibitory to the growth of plant-pathogenic oomycetes and to certain fungi. The production of kanosamine is inhibited by phosphate and facilitated by ferric iron and alfalfa seeding exudate. The accumulation of kanosamine in the Bacillus cereus UW85 is associated with sporulation. Production of kanosamine is regulated by plant factors. Its structure is identified as 3-amino-3-deoxy-D-glucose.
