Abstract

Resident theaters, imprecisely known as regional theaters, are professional, non-profit, home-based theater companies that produce seasonally and are under the League of Resident Theaters (LORT) equity contract. Several aspects of the resident theater have changed from the time the movement began in the late 1950s. For one, some no longer have resident actors who work for the whole season, but are hired per production for economic reasons. In spite of such developments, regional theater on the West Coast thrive and are seen to continue doing so well into the 21st century.
