Multifunctional yolk-shell nanoparticles: a potential MRI contrast and anticancer agent

Abstract: A new type of multifunctional nanomaterials, ] yolk-shell nanoparticles, are described that have displayed high cytotoxicity originated from the FePt yolks and strong magnetic resonance (MR) contrast enhancement resulting from the [Fe.sub.2][O.sub.3] shells. The studies have shown that these unique yolk-shell nanoparticles might lead to new designs of multifunctional nanostructures for nanomedicine.
