Abstract

The photosynthetic proteobacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus can undergo dissimilatory Fe(III) reduction. Several Fe(III) complexes were able to act as substrates for intact cells and membrane fractions of strain N22DNAR utilizing a ferrozine assay for Fe(II) formation. Cytochrome bc1 complex's function can be observed only with the superior substrate. Periods of membrane potential generation were directly related to the amount of complex added and were extended in the presence of 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide.
