Abstract

Advances in medical technology mean that many condition which are regarded as an abnormality, such as deafness, can now be cured. However, there is a danger that this can be taken to extremes. Already, prenatal screening allows many conditions to be detected before birth, and it is possible that eventually very few children will be born with a hereditary handicap. Striving to eliminate abnormalities in this way seems to devalue people who are handicapped, and almost seems to indicate that they should not be alive at all.
