Abstract

The government's balanced budget goal is threatening the advancement of scientific research because of the possible decrease in funding by about 30%. However, basic research in academes must be given priority to provide the technological edge in today's global economy. History shows that scientific discoveries led to many unexpected applications. However, most of the present technologies are based on principles established as far back as World War II.
