Abstract

A demonstrator unit to evaluate the technical feasibility of the Solenoidal Detector Collaboration's planned superconducting solenoid was prepared and tested. The measurements showed that the prototype successfully achieved the SDC's specifications with its maximum current of 12,000 A and integrated hoop strain of 0.1% under a maximum share stress in the conductor of 66 MPa. In addition, the magnet has a stored energy/effective cold mass ratio of 7.5 kJ/kg.
