Abstract

The newly discovered algH gene in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is involved in the production of nucleoside diphosphate kinase (Ndk). The algH gene is one of several genes that are activated under conditions which cause P. aeruginosa to convert from its nonmucoid form to the mucoid form. The mucoid form is covered by an alginate capsule that promotes adherence to cells of the respiratory tract.
