Firms try to put high-tech spin on freight transfer terminals

Intermodal companies have developed automated systems for the management of freight transfer facilities. Union Pacific's Automated Gate System uses video cameras and computer systems to identify and record incoming cargoes in its Lathro, Calif transfer terminal. Norfolk Southern will be using the Strategic Intermodal Management System to connect its terminals in Chicago and Kansas City to other facilities.
