Origen's version of Genesis 1:2

Abstract

An interpretation of a phrase in Genesis 1:2 by Origen as 'the earth was astonished and perplexed', thus personifying the earth, is examined. It is suggested that Genesis Rabba on Genesis 1:2 also provides a similar interpretation, probably based on Aramaic root words.
