Interleukin-1-beta induces interstitial collagenase gene expression and protein secretion in renal mesangial cells

Rat mesangial cells were incubated with recombinant human interleukin 1-beta (IL-1B) to determine if IL-1B induces gene expression of interstitial collagenase. The results show that IL-1B stimulates the synthesis and activity of interstitial collagenase. This activity of IL-1B involves tyrosine kinase signal transduction mechanisms, but not endogenous prostaglandins.
