Abstract

The myenteric plexus of the rat colon was denervated by treatment with benzalkonium chloride to determine why denervation hypersensitivity occurs in acquired denervation of myenteric neurons, but not in congenital absence of myenteric neurons. The results show that the number of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors increases after acquired denervation and causes denervation hypersensitivity.
