Conceptualizing gods through statues: a study of personification and localization in Taiwan

Abstract

The tradition among Chinese villagers in Taiwan to conceptualize gods through icons, statues or figurines is analyzed. These symbolic representations of personification and localization are found to be effective meeting grounds of god-like and human agencies, which have an impact on the villagers' activities.
