Abstract

Simulations of molecular dynamics can help chemistry students visualize abstract ideas in a concrete manner. The mathematics application software Mathematica can be used to produce an animated simulation through its notebook function. The example of silicon-fluorine etching reactions is provided with data files recording atom positions at selected intervals. This technique can both fascinate students and make the concepts more approachable.
