Abstract

A study was conducted to examine the role of the UME6 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in sporulation and meiosis-specific gene expression. S1 nuclease protection assays showed that UME6 encodes a Zn2Cys6 DNA-binding protein which binds to cis-acting element URS1. The complete deletion of UME6 caused the vegetative derepression of meotic genes during vegetative growth and a reduction in induction of meiosis-specific genes.
