Formal and informal rural credit in four provinces of Vietnam

A survey of 932 rural households was used to examine how the rural credit market operates in Vietnam. Formal loans are generally used for production and asset accumulation, while informal loans are used for consumption smoothening. It is concluded that a 'one size fits all' approach to credit policy in the country would be unsuitable.
