Rivalry among powers

Bosnia has become a stage for major-power rivalry. The US ended its noninterventionist stance and, in Aug 1995, joined mediation efforts and spelled out a new peace proposal. Through military action, such as through NATO air attacks on Bosnian Serb targets, the US is attempting to force the Serbs to compromise. The attacks did not keep Bosnian, Croat and Serb representatives from reaching, on Sep 8, an agreement in principle on a peace accord.
