Abstract
- A critical examination of F.R. Leavis's works on culture and commercialism looks into their development and evaluates their relevance to the '90s. Though his arguments on culture vs. civilization as well as minority vs. minority derive from Thomas Carlyle and Matthew Arnold, his approach is Marxian, that is, anti-capitalist. The critical practice of the '90s, and the educational concepts would surely meet his approval. His indictment of advertising, commercialization, Hollywood-style, his valoration of language and idealization of critical thinking and literature attest to this.
