Abstract

Optically switchable chelates are designed by introducing an iminodiacetate group into photochromic nitrobenzospiropyran with structurally different spiro(SP) and merocyanine(MC) states. The ability of the fluorescent MC state to bind to metal ions is useful in studies that require control of metal ions within living cells.
