Abstract

China currently has only 1.3 million private cars, or one for every 900 inhabitants. However, annual new car sales are expected to exceed 2 million within the next nine years, and international car manufacturers are keen to establish a strong position in a potentially very profitable market. The government has imposed a 110% tax on imported cars, hoping in this way to establish a strong domestic car industry.
