Abstract

Alasdair Gray presents the fictional biography of a real scholar who attempted to create a universal language in his novel 'Logopandocy.' Thomas Urquhart was occupied with linguistic studies that led him to pursue a means of improving society through communication. Gray narrates Urquhart's travails in trying to recover a lost manuscript containing his plans for the new language, but the mechanics of this langauge are not described directly in Gray's work.
