Abstract

An analysis of the nature and extent of gender segregation in the US workplace since 1970 is presented. The instrument used to measure such segregation is a modified index that incorporates both a composition and a gender effect. Results show that in white-collar jobs, segregation has tended to disappear with the increase in female employment while blue-collar workers have been increasingly segregated according to gender.
