Lean manufacturing for lean times

The US aerospace industry is embarking on lean manufacturing programs which have been spurred by reduced government spending on military and space programs, slumping commercial aviation sales and increased global competition. The automobile industry has already demonstrated how lean practices can lead to improved quality, cost management and productivity. Industry leaders such as McDonnell Douglas Corp. and Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Co. have affirmed the effectivity of lean manufacturing.
