Daphniphyllum alkaloids, 16. Total synthesis of (+)-codaphniphylline

A 12-step synthetic sequence enables the conversion of a homogeranyl iodide into enantiomerically pure (+)-codaphniphylline with an overall yield of 9%. Spectral analysis reveals the presence of a minor contaminant in the synthetic natural product. Presence of a minor enantiomer of the starting material is responsible for the contamination. Treatment with etheral HCl helps remove the contaminant from the synthetic codaphniphylline.
