Determining the indeterminate

Taking classic works of the American experimental movement as the primary focus for discussion, this article examines the nature of interpretative decisions both before and during a performance. The issues which inform a performer's decisions as to when, how, and what to play are placed within the context both of what is known of the composer's intentions and of the performing traditions which have subsequently developed.
